Steve Carlin is a Fayetteville, NC native. The son of an Army officer, Steve was born at Fort Bragg NC. Upon his father's retirement from the Army the family remained in Fayetteville as they had lived there since the 1940's and had many local ties in both the civilian and military communities. Steve graduated from Terry Sanford High School and Western Carolina University. In 1991 Steve married Mary Ann Culbreth, also from Fayetteville. Daughter Ariel Marie was born in 1998. From 1980 until 1984 Steve lived in Lafayette, Louisiana where he worked in the offshore oil industry as an offshore surveyor, positioning drilling rigs, platforms and pipelines. From 1988 to 2000 Steve held senior management positions at exhibit fabrication companies in Nashville, Chicago and Detroit. It was in Detroit where Steve had his greatest professional success as an Executive Director at the world's leading event marketing company.

Steve has led a very active life and enjoys a variety of interests. Among them are cooking for family and friends, fly-fishing, hunting, snow skiing, golfing, and photography. But his greatest love is a hobby that he shares with his wife Mary Ann, scuba diving. Mary Ann was a travel agent and planned the Carlin's dive trips to places such as Australia, Hawaii, Mexico, St. Lucia, St. Thomas, Tobermory Canada, the Florida Keys, Lake Huron, Cape Fear and Cape Lookout NC.

In April of 2000 Steve was diagnosed with ALS. He, his wife Mary Ann, and daughter Ariel have moved home to Fayetteville. The Carlin family battles ALS daily at home but also through advocacy and awareness campaigns and through their fundraising efforts for ALS research and ALS patient assistance.
